An authentic landmark of Japanese cuisine set off the beaten path in Seattle’s Industrial District, Maneki has been operating since 1904 and has remained a staple for locals and visitors alike. The restaurant is only open for 4 hours in the evening, and reservations are required. The tatami rooms, stocked bar, and classic menu add to the appeal of the oldest Japanese restaurant in Seattle.
To start we snacked on edamame, which was decidedly less salty than others, lending to a fresh taste. The tamago was chilled and didn’t have a strong “eggy” flavor. The unique shape was interesting to the eye and it felt more like an experience. For the main course, a warm pork katsu curry was perfect to ward off the early spring air. The curry was rich in umami, while the pork cutlet was thin and breaded to perfection.
