Onibaba

08/10/2023 by Mysa

Seattle, WA

Onibaba is the latest hit from the owners of the legendary Tsukushinbo, featuring a variety of onigiri and a selection of classics from the OG restaurant. The tiny restaurant has limited seating and can be hard to spot if you don’t know what you are looking for. It’s one of those places where if you know you know, and word of mouth has served them extremely well.  They are located in the International District in downtown Seattle.

The onigiri menu is large and varied, so I picked up a couple during my visit; the Karaage onigiri and the cheese yaki onigiri.  Other options include Takana (pickled mustard greens), Ume (sour plum and shiso leaf), Oyako (salty salmon and salmon roe), and Ebi ten (shrimp tempura and teriyaki sauce).  There are so many tasty options not listed here!  The two that I tried were delicious – the Karaage was crunchy and sweet, and the cheese yaki was slightly charred giving it extra depth of flavor.

Other selections on their menu include musubi, ochazuke, and donburi.  The katsu curry donburi is what will keep me coming back.  It’s currently ingrained in my brain as the best katsu curry I’ve ever had and completely lived up to the hype I was hearing from my Seattle friends and coworkers.  The fried chicken cutlet was perfectly crisp and juicy, the curry was deep and savory, and the rice was a lovely bridge between the two.  The salad included with my dish was also vibrant and fresh!  It’s a fantastic spot for lunch, a special dinner, or the ultimate meal pickup.
