With operations based in Hawaii, ‘Ulu Mana produces breadfruit chips and hummus that are a unique, delicious, and savory snack. ‘Ulu is the Hawaiian word for breadfruit and it is a starchy, tropical fruit. All of the breadfruit ‘Ulu Mana uses comes from local farmers on Oahu and the Big Island.
What We Said
Kiwi – A surprising, almost refried bean-like texture, the ‘Ulu Mana Hummus is a delicious addition to any meal. I tried the Fun-dried Tomato flavor and it was perfect on a lunch wrap with some sliced turkey and chopped bell peppers. The Sweet Potato Mix chips are crispy and slightly salty. If you need any reassurance to give them a try, I ate half the bag in one sitting!
Ume – I might have a slight addiction to the garlic sea salt breadfruit chips which started this happy journey with ‘Ulu Mana’s other products. The garlic chips are salty, actually garlicky, and the coconut oil gives them a nice touch of flavor. They’re so good!
We tried the Bangin’ Beet and Jalapeno hummus. The beet had a wonderful color and sweetness while the jalapeno was packed with flavor and spicier than I thought it would be. Both were great eaten with the chips and cut veggies.
Momo – I’ve never heard of breadfruit before trying out the chips and was pleasantly surprised by the crisp texture and jalapeño spice. The slices reminded me of pineapple, but the thin cuts weren’t fibrous at all. I was even more pleasantly surprised by the jalapeno hummus which was packed with flavor and mimicked the texture of hummus perfectly! I love spice and was happy with the level – enjoyable for anyone, but still packs a good tang. Highly recommended with chips (breadfruit chips), fresh veggie slices, or sandwiches.
Mysa – I had never heard of breadfruit either and I fell in loooove with both the chips and the hummus. I had cool lime breadfruit chips. The texture is nice and crispy but doesn’t hurt your mouth like some thin vegetable chips, and it turns into a beautiful soft bite as you are chewing that reminds me just a little of the inside of a buttery baked potato. I didn’t pick up on the lime flavor much but the chip was so good I didn’t care. My hummus flavor was jalapeno and it was delightfully spicy and flavorful, with an excellent texture. It would be great to add to nachos, tacos, or burritos, the perfect flavor to complement the other ingredients.
The Final Tidbit
‘Ulu Mana makes a great hummus and chip! We could definitely see ordering more in the future when we crave that crisp, salty goodness.
