Deep Sea Sugar & Salt

Deep Sea Sugar & Salt has opened a new location in Columbia City and is definitely worth a visit! Known for their decadent layered cakes, they have a couple of seasonal flavors every month in addition to their standard lineup. They have classic and unique flavors like London Fog to lemon to rich chocolate guaranteed to satisfy everyone.

My favorite slice this round was the carrot pineapple cake – perfectly moist with cream cheese frosting; this one really took the cake. I loved the twist of adding pineapple to a traditional carrot cake too.

The olive oil cake had an interesting body but I wanted it to be more grapefruit forward.

The chocolate salted caramel was more savory than I expected, but I enjoyed it and the chocolate cake base is solid.

I also tried the Raspberry Cardamom Rose slice on my own and really enjoyed it – the perfect amount of rose in the whipped cream and spice in the cake. The cake base was a sour cream cake which was less moist and slightly more crumbly, but still delicious.

Pro tip – make sure to pre-order online the morning you want to pick-up to make sure you get the flavors you want! We missed out on the London Fog that was sold out, but the one bite I tried is definitely making me a return customer. By the time I was in-store around 2pm there was only one cake slice left!

The carrot pineapple was so delicious!  Definitely my favorite of the three that I tried.  Such a satisfying texture, hefty but not too dense, soft but not too pillowy.  The frosting was delicious and creamy.  It had solid carrot cake flavors with the additional subtle sweetness of pineapple.

The olive oil cake was my second favorite.  I liked how light the grapefruit flavor was, it complemented the mellowness of the cake with just a tad of brightness.

For the salted caramel slice, I second Momo in that the chocolate cake base was excellent.  I did find the frosting to be a tad too rich, it was almost like when you bite into something with a smokey flavor and it leaves a strong impression on the entire bite.

Overall the slices were fantastic, and I can’t wait to try more of their monthly seasonal flavors!

We tried the carrot pineapple, grapefruit olive oil, and chocolate salted caramel cakes. The carrot pineapple was my favorite. Both the cake base and the frosting were very good and complimented each other well. Each bite was delicious!

The grapefruit olive oil and chocolate salted caramel were also good cakes. However, I was looking for a bigger citrus zing with the grapefruit. And the salted caramel almost carried a stout beer flavor that I found slightly bitter.

Overall, all 3 cakes were tasty and I look forward to trying more of their flavors. They carry 2 monthly flavors and they always sound unique and worth the trip.
