Katsu San is “a modern Japanese pork cutlet restaurant” that specializes in Koji-cured meat that results in tender and juicy pork and chicken. They also make their own panko bread crumbs and all of the sauces that pair with the katsu.
Located in Richmond BC, Katsu San deserves a place on the list if you’re visiting that area of Canada.

Katsu San has the best katsu I’ve had in North America and even better than most of the places I’ve tried in Asia largely due to their house-made panko breading. It’s outstandingly crispy and light without being oily.
I enjoyed their variety plate during my first visit – the shrimp is large and juicy, the cheesy katsu is rich and delicious, but their pork katsu stands out with its tender and flavorful cut.
You can choose your own adventure on how to enjoy your meal with the variety of sauce/dipping options – try a piece with a little wasabi, a dash of pink salt, their apple vinegar sauce, or go with their classic tonkatsu sauce paired with freshly ground sesame. All this paired with the classic unlimited sliced cabbage with sesame dressing makes every meal here a winner!
Pro Tip: Katsu San does not take reservations. Line up about 20 minutes before opening to get in on their first seating. Otherwise, be prepared to wait or check back in an hour.
