Richmond, BC
The Richmond Night Market, open from the last weekend of April through the first weekend of October, is truly a summer wonderland with food, vendors, and carnival game booths. It is conveniently located near a subway line, has free parking, and is walkable from nearby hotels in the area.
The foods are multi-cultural and you’ll for sure find a favorite in the aisles. Butterbeer, Taiwanese fried chicken, mochi french toast? Yes!!
Ume
Taiwanese Fried Chicken – This checks all the boxes of salty, fried, tender, and spicy. It is excellent fried crispy chicken with superb flavor.
Rotato – It’s a fun, fried potato on a stick!
Bao Buns – Fried mantou buns, topped with ice cream, condensed milk, fruits, and sugar. Need I say more? But I will. The bun is crispy, donut-like on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. The cold, creamy ice cream is a juxtaposition to the bun and makes it the perfect dessert.
Tip – Spend the extra money for a Zoom Pass to skip the entrance line. It’s worth it. Also, most booths only accept Canadian money, so go prepared.
Momo
Richmond night market is by far the largest and most diverse gathering of food options I’ve seen in NA. I love that they incorporate Asian food from all of east and southeast Asia.
My number 1 go-to is the cumin lamb buns from Chef James – get your own because you won’t want to share!
The Taiwanese Fried chicken from G8 Taiwan Kitchen is also amazing – always freshly fried with a hefty portion of Taiwanese Basil (my new addiction).
For dessert I recommend the Bao Bun like Ume but also Tochi – mini mochi french toasts that come with assorted cream flavors.
Pro tip – There can be long queues to pick-up your food so I recommend splitting up if you go with others to grab food from multiple stands and reconvene at the eating area.
