Saint Bread

06/29/2023 by Mysa

Seattle, WA

Saint Bread can be found on the Portage Bay waterfront in the University of Washington area just North of Seattle.  While it’s just a little off the main path, the bold architecture of the compact building is easy to catch from the street, along with their lovely outdoor space. On their site, it’s called out that “Saint Bread operates with intentional and unwavering commitment to doing what is best for ourselves and our community,” which I can see reflected in the love and care they put into their food, interactions, and events within the community.

Pastry

Saint Bread offers pastry, made to order, and ready to go food items.  I can’t say that I love everything that I’ve tried, but the menu items that I love, I LOVE.  I usually grab a mixed box of pastries, favoring the cardamom knot with its comforting warm spice, and the Yuzu Polenta cake, a dense, mild cake with subtly sharp glaze on top.

The chocolate chip cookie is also a delight, thin with a hint of a chewy texture, decadent chocolate, and just the right hit of salt.

One last call out is the black sesame bun.  Every time I start eating one I think that I don’t like it, but then find a few minutes later I’ve eaten the entire thing.  I think that goes to show how expert their pastry makers are.

The Burger

When it comes to food, I keep going back for the cheeseburger.  I have seen the question floating around of whether it’s the best burger in Seattle, and I can see why!  It’s a thin beef patty with American cheese, pickles, shredded lettuce, and hoisin island dressing on a Hawaiian bun.  The pickles are not too sour, and not too thick.  The lettuce adds a perfect amount of fresh crunch, and the cheese melts right into the burger for a rich bite.  The hoisin island dressing is so delicious, and the bun brings it all together to make it sing.  I add bacon to give an extra layer of savory satisfaction.  You can also add egg or another patty!

I recently tried their french fries as well, and they are phenomenal in the most simple of ways.  Crisp and tender with just the right amount of seasoning.

Other food items include things like the Veg B.L.T.T. with vegan bacon, cinnamon-Okinawan sugar toast, a rice bowl (add salmon!), and egg salad sandwich with Kewpie.  I plan to keep going back to try more of the food items….if I can pull myself away from the cheeseburger.

Tasty Tip:  Plan ahead if you are making a lunch visit as there will likely be a line!
