Communion

05/23/2023 by Mysa, Kiwi

Seattle, WA

Found in the Central Seattle neighborhood, Communion combines fine dining with family dinner.  The southern cooking-inspired menu has all the staples while also featuring fresh and unique dishes.  The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with the kitchen open to the dining hall and a well-stocked bar on the back wall.  It is currently only open for dinner and a reservation is required.

Starting with the recommended appetizer, the deviled eggs were a classic taste with a twist.  There were three different toppings: roe, oyster, and candied bacon, which was the easy winner as the smoky flavor paired well with the creamy egg filling.

Next up on the menu were the sides: mac & cheese, sweet potato cornbread, and greens & neckbones.  The neckbone meat was so tender that it fell apart with the slightest touch and the greens were fresh and delicious.

Baked in a cast iron skillet, the mac & cheese was my least favorite dish of the evening, with a strong flavor that didn’t quite blend with the other dishes we ordered.
The sweet potato cornbread was also baked in a cast iron skillet and was a stand-out on the table with a unique flavor to a classic Southern side.

My main dish was Seared Pork Belly & Pinto Beans, cooked to melt-in-your-mouth perfection with an aji amarillo sauce.  This was easily my favorite plate of the night.
To wash everything down, the Cucumber Lime Tonic Mocktail was great to cool off after sitting in the warm Seattle sunshine.

The dessert for the night was peach pie with vanilla & whiskey ice cream.  The ice cream complimented the peach pie well, but the buttery, flakey pie crust and fresh peaches made the dish spectacular.

Totally agree with Kiwi that the candied bacon deviled egg was the top of the three!  I did really enjoy the other two versions as well.

The greens and neckbones were a smooth, savory,  barely-there-chew from the greens delight.

My main dish was the hood sushi bowl, and as I’m writing this I just want to go back for another.  The protein in the dish is fried catfish, and it was perfectly seasoned and so delicately breaded and crispy.  I could have eaten a full bowl of that on its own, but when combined with the rice, seaweed salad, pickled veggies, and delicious remoulade, it was even more of a star.  If you like rice bowls, I definitely recommend trying this one!

The sweet potato cornbread was very nice, not too sweet and not too oily, and I am on the same page with Kiwi about the mac and cheese.  I think that it was actually something that would do better as a main dish because the flavors were strong and dense.

The other callout I have from the items we tried was the seasonal house lemonade.  It was refreshing, and paired so well with the rich food.  So enjoyable that I had two of them!  Communion is a satisfying taste of the south with a twist in the Seattle area!
